ABSTRACT

Background Experimental studies have shown that radiofrequency electromagnetic waves emitted by mobile phones can cause adverse effects on male reproductive health, including decreased semen quality and altered sex hormones. However, the results of epidemiological studies on the relationship between mobile phone use and male semen quality are inconsistent. Furthermore, there are few epidemiological studies on the association of mobile phone use with sex hormones. Objective To explore the associations of mobile phone use with male semen quality and sex hormones. Methods A total of 2045 men visited the reproductive medicine center of a hospital in Wuhan and ordered infertility examination were recruited from December 2018 to January 2020. Information on mobile phone use was obtained using a questionnaire. Among them, 1232 and 1694 men were eligible for semen quality analyses and sex hormone analyses, respectively. Multiple linear and logistic regression models were used to analyze the associations of mobile phone use with male semen quality and sex hormones. Results After adjusting for potential confounders, there was no statistically significant associations of mobile phone use with sperm progressive motility, sperm total motility, sperm concentration, sperm count, or serum luteinizing hormone (P>0.05). However, serum total testosterone showed a declined tendency with increasing daily duration of mobile phone use (Ptrend=0.08). Compared with men with daily mobile phone use of 0-2 h, men with daily mobile phone use of 2.1-5, 5.1-8, and >8 h showed decreased serum total testosterone concentrations by 6.29% (95%CI: 0.40%-11.84%), 6.01% (95%CI: 0.60%-12.19%), and 7.87% (95%CI: 0.40%-14.79%), respectively. Conclusion Mobile phone use is not associated with male semen quality and serum luteinizing hormone, but increasing daily duration of mobile phone use is potentially associated with a tendency to lower male serum total testosterone.

ABSTRACT

ObjectiveTo evaluate the clinical efficacy of TDP (specific electromagnetic wave) combined with Osteoking in the treatment of knee osteoarthritis of Qi stagnation and blood stasis type. MethodA total of 104 patients with knee osteoarthritis of Qi stagnation and blood stasis type, who received conservative therapy in The Third People's Hospital of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region from July 2019 to December 2021, were randomized into the control group and study group with the random number table method, 52 cases in either group. The control group was treated with TDP, and the study group with TDP and Osteoking. The treatment lasted 1 week for both groups, with 1-month follow-up. Subjective indexes of visual analog scale (VAS) score and Western Ontario McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) score, and objective indexes of visual tenderness index and visual knee range of motion were determined before and after treatment to evaluate the pain and functions of patients. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) syndrome score was calculated. The serum erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) were detected before and after treatment, and the total clinical effective rate was calculated. ResultBefore treatment, the baseline information and all the scores of the two groups were comparable. After treatment, the VAS score, WOMAC score, tenderness index, knee range of motion, and TCM syndrome score were improved in both groups (P<0.01). After the treatment, the VAS score and WOMAC score of the study group were lower than those of the control group (P<0.01) and the improvement of tenderness index in the study group was better than that in the control group (P<0.05). The knee range of motion in the study group was better than that in the control group (P=0.061). The TCM syndrome score of study group was lower than that of control group (P<0.01) after treatment. The post-treatment serum ESR and hs-CRP level in the two groups decreased significantly after treatment, and the study group were lower than those of the control group (P<0.01). The total clinical effective rate of the study group was 90.4%(47/52), as compared with the 53.8%(28/52) in the control group (P<0.05). No obvious adverse events occurred during treatment in both groups. ConclusionThe clinical efficacy of TDP combined with Osteoking in the treatment of knee osteoarthritis of Qi stagnation and blood stasis type is remarkable, which can improve knee pain and functions, alleviate TCM syndrome, and reduce inflammatory indexes, with high safety.

ABSTRACT

The society's exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMF) has been growing considerable due to the great technological expansion observed in the last few years. Generation as well as distribution and use of electric energy can generate low frequency electromagnetic fields (50 and 60 Hz). Issues have been demonstrating that EMF exposure could provoke significantly physiological changes, however, the extension of EMF effects weren't totally clarified. The major objective of this issue was to evaluate the EMF (60 Hz and 1 mT) effects on DNA integrity and sperm morphology in Wistar rats with mature sexuality that were exposed during different stages of testicular development. According to our results, EMF did not change DNA integrity, but we could observe morphological changes in sperm after exposure to EMF. These changes in sperm morphology may reduce the reproductive potential. Therefore, we should consider the EMF as a potential risk to public health, recommending the implementation of further research seeking to establish safe levels of exposure to EMF.

ABSTRACT

Backgrounds : To evaluate the effects of electromagnetic wave onto the nervous system, this study introduces a method to measure the EEG of rabbits exposed to microwave fields and analyze it in compliance with theoretical specific absorption rate (SAR) distribution in the head of the rabbit obtained from the simulation study. Furthermore, the effects of nimodipine and naloxone on the EEG during the electromagnetic irradiation were reported. METHODS: 1) EEG of 20 rabbits of 2 groups was measured before and after exposure to 2.45 GHz microwave with the power density of 10 dBm and 20 dBm respectively for 10 minutes and compared with those of another 10 rabbits which have not been exposed. The result was compared with the simulation of the distribution of SAR in the 3-layered sphere model approximated from the head of rabbit 2) Another 10 rabbits were intravenously given with nimodipine before and during the irradiation. 3) Naloxone (0.25 mg/kg) was given to the other 10 rabbits which have given repeatedly exposure to microwave (twenty daily 10 min sessions). Results : The simulation of SAR distribution depicted the presence of hot-spot situated around the rabbit's thalamus and brainstem. Higher field energy of microwave (20 dBm) induced a total power reduction indicative of CNS activation and a decrease in power distribution in the delta band and an increase In the alpha and beta bands in a significant manner(P(0.05). The changes were not reversed by nimodipine-treatment. Wllen naloxone injected, 2 rabbits showed periodic theta rhythms and a clinical seizure occurred in a rabbit. Conclusion : The EEG changes suggest that microwave can alter neuronal activities in the brain, especially thalamus and brainstem. The effects may be thermal in nature arid microwave irradiation shares a common mechanism with physical and psychological stresses that also precipitate seizures.
